Connecticut recruiting LGBT families to adopt, foster kids

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut’s child welfare agency has launched an initiative to actively recruit members of the state’s LGBT community to become foster and adoptive parents, bucking recent efforts in some states to curtail gay adoptions.

Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Thursday that Connecticut wants to be known as a state that welcomes and embraces the LGBT community, especially considering there are 4,300 children in state care and about half of them likely won’t return to their biological families.

“We just have to get this word out,” Malloy said. “We have to get more of our children placed with our families in our state.”

Happy New Year!

As we say farewell to the, at times, tumultuous 2016, and ring in what is certain to be a shaky new year, let us all resolve to STAND UP to bullying, hate, and discrimination of all people! Gay, straight, lesbian, bi, trans, cis, boy, girl, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, black, white, hispanic, asian, tall, short, disabled, able-bodied, old, young, skinny, fat, etc etc etc. ALL PEOPLE deserve equal treatment, ALL PEOPLE want love.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
— Edmund Burke

No one is truly "normal," so remember as you celebrate your own quirks and uniqueness, that you should also celebrate the uniqueness of others... When in doubt, err on the side of LOVE, COMPASSION, and UNDERSTANDING. Be willing to see other viewpoints, be able to hear other ideas. Stand up against hate, calling it out wherever you see it, defending EVERYONE against bigotry, no matter if it's based on gender, orientation, identification, race, age, ability, religion, weight... Don't let anyone be told they are less-than. You are their DEFENDER; never let hate triumph.

We've Hit Our Goal!

Wow! In just 24hrs our Kickstarter campaign pledges have more than DOUBLED!! Over a thousand dollars raised in a single day! Which means we've officially EXCEEDED our goal!!! Friends, family, and total strangers have all come together to categorically REJECT HATE, and put their money where their mouth is to take a stand for equality, acceptance, and LOVE ❤️ How very, very heartwarming!

Wait... So now what? The campaign still has 4 weeks left in its fundraising period, are we going to just kick back and put our feet up now? Heck no! The more money we raise, the more books we can produce! The more books we can produce, the more safe spaces we can create for children all over the globe! Gay, straight, bi, cis, trans... Kids from all across the rainbow spectrum will know, despite what they may hear at school or on TV, that they have a safe space with YOU! That you accept and love them just as they are! There's no greater gift that you can give than unconditional love... DR

Book Two in Pre-Production!

The second book within the Tolerant Toddler series has been green lit and subsequently begun pre-production! It's very exciting to start a new project while watching the popularity of the first book beginning to rise... Thanks all, for your love and support!

Our next book will take place in the Pacific NW...

Any guesses on what adorable, cuddly little animal it will feature?

10 Days In...

...and we're a third of the way there! Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement! But let's not let this plateau -- there's a lot of work left to do!

I appreciate you so much if you've donated or purchased a package at Kickstarter, but there's one more thing I'd like you to do for me if you would... SHARE! Share this page,, or our Kickstarter site on your social media. Every time someone does that, we see an uptick in visits and sales! If we actually stand a chance, we've got to make this project go viral! So share on your sites, but also write in to others to inform them about the book. Even if it sounds absurd, writing in to charity and news organizations can have a major impact! YouTube stars, bloggers, Instagram celebrities... anyone with an interest and an outreach. The more people we have contacting the Oregonian or the Trevor Project, etc, the higher chance someone will take notice of us...

Lots of love,

Doug & Harper

Pre-Sales at Kickstarter!

I've started a fundraising page to help get this book published! Mascot Books has extended an offer to publish, but as a well-respected "hybrid publisher," while they handle distribution and promotion, the author pays to print. It's not an ideal set-up, but with the catch-22 of no publisher willing to look at your work without agent representation, and no agent willing to take you seriously unless you've already published... This is not a bad option.

So what happens once fundraising goals are met? Mascot will assign an editor to "A Normal Turtle" to help smooth some rough edges and format the pages correctly for publishing. After that, the distribution network kicks in, getting A Normal Turtle on the shelves of Barnes & Noble,, and many other retailers!

If you can't contribute, if you don't want a signed copy, custom t-shirt, even a limited-edition print... Then you can help support this important, timely project by sharing our link on social media! It's easy, it's free, and it's the most effective way to help us out!

Lots of love!
