Do you have more books?

Soon, yes! There are two books in pre-production: An Actual Family, meant for LGBTQ families with adopted children, and The Unbreakable Toy, for children living with chronic conditions -- as well as many other exciting projects in the works!

What does "LGBTQ Kid's Book" mean?

Short Answer: This is a book designed to help Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Questioning youth love and accept themselves for who they are; as well as teaching all children to empathize with those who are different from themselves.

Long Answer: There are several books on the market about families with LGBTQ parents, but there are few books out there about LGBTQ kids themselves (especially trans youth). It has long been considered inappropriate to speak about children as being gay, trans, etc. Because of that, LGBTQ kids have long been left out of discussions about self-esteem and acceptance, frequently even told that they alone are the undesirable exception to the "be yourself" rule. This is inevitably a very isolating experience, and can be detrimental to the development of a child's sense of self-worth. As our society has progressed in its understanding of orientation and gender identity, most people have come to accept the fact that one is born as they are, and thus LGBTQ children often know they are "different" from a very young age. Not addressing this (or worse, to stigmatize it) can lead to all sorts of difficulties for LGBTQ kids; all too frequently resulting in drug use and suicide. This book aims to create life-long safe spaces for children of all sorts by encouraging acceptance of self, and also teaching all children to be open and compassionate to those around them.

Does this book discuss sex?

No. Neither sex, nor anything even remotely close to it. This is not a book about who you are attracted to; but about celebrating who you are, and being able to be that person openly without shame. It is meant to lay the groundwork for discussing topics like being gay or trans, without using these words themselves.

Is this book age-appropriate for my children?

A Normal Turtle is written for the 2-3 grade level, but is appropriate for children of all ages! Kids and adults alike will appreciate the clever, lyrical, rhyming story and brightly colored illustrations. It is charming and cute, with images and moments your child will love to share with you! If you have started reading with your child, then A Normal Turtle is sure to become a favorite of the whole family!
